Matt Powell is a director, designer & producer, working with Musical Theatre, Video & Queerness.
As a director/producer, Matt has created a diverse portfolio of acclaimed & award winning work specialising in bespoke Youth Productions and Community Projects. He currently focuses on reframing Musical Theatre to be contemporary and critically challenging by providing opportunities for UK Musical Theatre artists & reframing revivals.
Often working through multiple disciplines, his practice combines cinematic, scenographic styles through live video & projection with embodiment, movement & music to create visual spectacles. As a designer, he looks at how the digital can interact with reality.
He has an active interest in the representation of queerness in musical theatre both in academia & practice. His thesis explored the notion of Queer Reframing & he is currently developing a revue to put the research in practice.
Matt is finishing his BA (Hons) Theatre Practice - Performance Arts at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama. During his studies, he became the first student to work for MA Music Theatre as Assistant Director supporting the public productions of the 2019 & 2020 cohort.
Currently, he is Artistic Director for uprising: a musical theatre revolution: a series of events showcasing UK Musical Theatre & reframed productions. He is Assistant Director for Plaza (MA Music Theatre) & is currently seeking opportunities & representation for Resident/Assistant roles from July.
Matt identifies as Queer using he/them pronouns. He is an advocate for Intimacy on Set and a member of Musical Theatre Network.
