Matt Powell is a director, designer & producer specialising in Contemporary and Experimental Musical Theatre.
His directorial practice focuses on the challenge of reframing Musical Theatre to be contemporary and critically challenging. He directs & produces work through MTExperiments, an organisation devoted to this challenge. Recent directing work includes a reimagined protest staging of American Idiot & a dystopian, all female staging of Chicago (High School Edition). His practice combines cinematic, scenographic styles through Live Video & Projection with embodiment, movement & music to create visual spectacles.
For the past six years, he has directed, produced and designed a diverse range of award winning work through his companies: Streetlight Theatre (2013-2015) and Creatio Arts (2016-Present) including Youth Productions and Community Projects. Further production credits include Spring Awakening and Carrie as Movement Director/Designer.
Currently, Matt studies at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama in BA (Hons) Theatre Practice - Performance Arts. During his studies, he became the first student to Assistant Direct on MA Music Theatre public productions including The Tunnel (Maja Milatovic-Ovadia) & Into the Woods (Adam Lenson).
Matt is current developing uprising: a musical theatre revolution through MTExperiments & will be undertaking research into reframing the role of gender and sexuality in Musical Theatre.
Matt identifies as Queer Male. He has a keen interest in the portrayal of gender and sexuality on stage. He is also an advocate for Intimacy on Set and a member of Musical Theatre Network.
